Class on 4/17

Hari OM Dear Parents and Children.

It's Samskriti time and we are getting ready towards the big day!

As mentioned earlier, our art projects are almost coming to a close and we need a couple sessions to completely wind up. Most kids are done with the thoran leaf project and we are almost through the backbone project as well. Our tree project is also done and we're so glad as kids came up with their qualities by themselves. We would really appreciate if we get those empty kitchen towel paper rolls for our projects. We want as many as you may please provide.

Other than our art projects, kids also colored from our textbooks and we heard a nice story which emphasized on to trust parents and follow their directions at all times.

A quick snack time followed by Guru stotram and Hanuman chalisa rendering. We are so happy that all kids do know to sing and/or chant, but just that they seem to be reluctant in participating. We would want all of them to equally render nicely- loud and clear.
We concluded our class with closing verses.

Kindly send in all supplies- pencils, markers, erasers, crayons etc, we want them to focus on their work and time goes by in waiting for someone to finish and borrow after and the focus is lost.
Please make them bring all adequate supplies.

Thank you.
Best Regards

Class on 4/10

Hari OM Dear Parents and Kids,

Today as usual we started the class with opening slokas.
We at once started with our art projects- the green leaves Thoran project. We are happy that we completed all the 11 leaves, now just left with tying them together and forming a thoran.
Today's work was a huge one, where kids did about 6 leaves on the card-stock. They were happy and enthusiastic about applying their creative ideas in coloring and presenting their works.
Good job kids!

We will now have to work on the 8 qualities which forms as a backbone for life. We have done more than half in the project, just a little to go to complete. Parents, please kindly send in EMPTY KITCHEN PAPER TOWEL ROLLS in the coming classes as part of our art projects.

Parents, please make sure that the child gets to balavihar with bags, books, supplies and snacks. We want all children to have their own pencils, markers, erasers, crayons etc to focus in their work.

Next class is on 10/17. Please bring the kids without absenting as we have to start our Samskriti practices as well. We appreciate your cooperation without which our Dhairyam family is incomplete. Thanks to all, greatly appreciated.

We concluded our class by singing Hanuman chalisa- all kids did a fabulous singing/chanting, followed by Guru stotram and with closing prayers.

Good luck to all who have enrolled to take part in the Gita chanting competition on 4/16.

Attached a pic of today's class summary.

See you all next Sunday- 10/17.

We planned to finish all very soon in the forth coming classes. Please send in empty kitchen paper rolls by next session.

class on 3/13

Hari OM Dear parents and kids.

Our class started off as usual after the assembly with a very few children, but slowly we almost came closer to full strength with in a few minutes. This was because we sprang forward!!! (DLS)

We began with kids chanting a few random slokas and we are so proud of each of them! Great job kids!

We concluded our Hanuman chalisa. Now, this means we completed the prescribed curriculum for our grade. But yes, we still have to finish up some art works and many exciting stories and other activities.

We concluded the chalisa by learning the verses 33 through 40.
33. Singing Hanuman Ji's praise makes Lord Rama bless and relieves all miseries of previous births.

34. At the end of one's life, when one goes to the abode of Sri Rama. such person always remains a Hari Bhakta.

35. Even though a devotee does not think of any other deity but Sri hanuman, he will surely be blessed and enjoy happiness.

36. All miseries and torments will vanish when one remembers the brave Sri Hanuman.

37. Victory to you, Hanuman ji, who has control over His senses. Bless us with your grace as our Guru dev.

38. One who recites chalisa 100 times is released from earthly bondage or sorrows and there's no rebirth and will enjoy absolute bliss.

39. One who reads Hanuman Chalisa regularly, will attain perfection to which Lord Siva (Gauri's patidev) is the witness.

40. Tulasidasa, who wrote the chalisa is always a servant of Lord Rama and he prays that the Lord make his heart as Lords' place.

Final verse-
Son of the wind God, destroyer of all miseries and remover of all difficulties, Lord Hanuman is the embodiment and a symbol of auspiciousness. Hanuman Ji along with Rama, Sita and Lakshmana dwell in all devotees heart. Please stay in our hearts forever.

We read through 3 stories which talks about taking a vow and following it with pure mind and focus. This concentration and devotion leads to pure bhakti and takes closer to God.

Now that we are done with the texts, we will start with our pending art work and will try to finish up soon. So, kindly please send in pencils, erasers, crayons, markers, glue stick. We want all kids to have their own supplies. Also, there are a few kids who come to class with no snacks. Please pack a healthy nut free snack along. Thank you.

Please take a moment to sign up and participate in the Vasudhaiva kutumbakam program coming up at our Vrindavan ashram.
Kindly refer to the pics for the homework and class happenings. Thanks.
Next class- 3/20

Class on 3/6

Hari OM Dear Parents and Kids.

Today we had a long assembly which included, special bhajan by swaranjali on Sivarathrti fest and other exciting information on a few upcoming events. Please watch out for emails.

We are very close to finish the Hanuman Chalisa. Today we saw verses 27,28,29,30,31, and 32.

Hanuman JI, The skillful
27. Hanuman JI  skillfully carried out all the missions of Lord Rama, who is a supreme yogi ruling everyone.

Rama trusted Hanuman JI because He was disciplined and lived by many vows. Vow is a tapas. One who has taken many vows and lives by them is a Tapasvi. One becomes great and a noble personality, when lived by vows, rules and discipline.

The determination of our pujya gurudev living with Paramaguru in cold Himalayas is a vow and he accomplished it.
Moral of the potmaker story. A silly vow reaps great benefit if being honest all the times.

Hanuman JI, the large hearted.
28. Hanuman JI fulfills all our desires- all our work will be accomplished. We will never be unsuccessful- also would benefit the fruit of the life.

Hanuman JI can grant all our wishes that are good for us.
God exactly gives what is good for us.

The story of a man who walked into a Gods' store to get an apple, istead he got apple seeds, through which he had a big farm of apples to enjoy in his rest of the life.

Hanuman JI, the radiant.
29. Hanuman Ji's glory radiates through all the four yugas and fame shines everywhere in the universe.
As a son of wind God- His presence is eternal and is everywhere. hanuman Ji is also known as Chiranjeevi one who lives forever.

30. Hanuman Ji, the protector of righteous and destroyer of the wicked. He is a dear one of Sri Rama.
Hanuman JI used His might to protect the righteous (good people, saints and sages) and destroy the evil. An unselfishness feel in the heart while serving good people including Tapasvis, rishis etc.

Hanuman JI, the Humble.
31. Sita mata bestowed upon Hanuman JI, that He may grant 8 sidhis and 9 kind of wealth to anyone who is humble and is honest.

32. Hanuman JI has a special gift with Him all the times- The magical Rama rasa. Hanuman JI is so blessed and fortunate to be Rama's dasa forever.

Bowing/prostrating with all 8 limbs, with a pure heart of good thinking and doing a shastanga pranama is completely surrendering self to the supreme Lord.

Homework- Kindly refer to the pic attached for the homework to be done and get to class the next Sunday (3/13)

Please make sure to send in required supplies, a notebook and the prescribed books with your child every week.
And do send in a healthy (nut-free) snack since most of us are hungry by the time we start our class ;)

Thank you.

Class on 2/28

Hari Om

Dear Parents,
The following is the update for the class that happened on 2/28/16. We started with the opening prayers. Verses 24 - 27 were discussed in class. We understood the meaning of each verse and heard some related stories.

Verse 24: Hanuman Ji, the Warrior
Meaning of verse 24: Evil spirits dare not go near a person if they hear the name of the great warrior, Hanuman Ji being repeated.
Hanuman Ji’s nama smarana (chanting of name) can and will keep ghosts and nightmare away. I discussed my own experience from when I was in first grade. I saw a movie and got scared. I started getting nightmares and even fever because of my fear. That’s when my mother chanted Anjaneya Dandakam (Telugu stotram similar to the Chalisa) for me. I got relief from fear and my nightmares never recurred. That is the power of Hanuman and Faith in Hanuman.

Verse 25: Hanuman Ji, the
All ailments, diseases and affliction disappear when Hanuman Ji's name is repeated continuously.
Moral: Chant Hanuman Ji's name and any disease will definitely disappear
Diseases of the body (Vyadhihi) medications are regular prescribed ones
Diseases of the mind (Adhihi) medications are apologizing, being nice and kind always.
The children gave me examples for bodily diseases as well as mind diseases. And they came up with excellent answers when I asked them to give me examples for someone with a diseased mind. The question asked was “Give me an example of a person with diseased mind and explain what disease his mind had.” Some of the answers I got - “Ravana, Karna, Duryodhana, Dusshasana, Meghnadh. I also got some out of curriculum answers like “Voldemort” :D and I agreed
Verse 26: Hanuman Ji, the Beacon of Light
*True Pooja- All our actions and words, should reflect our devotion to the Lord.
* God resides in all of us, including animals.
* When we worship Hanuman Ji by thoughtful action and speech he helps us to overcome our difficulties.
Meaning of verse 26
Hanuman Ji helps those who worship Him with sincerity and faith (by thought - man, action - Karma and speech- Vachan)
Story 1: Saint Eknath’s pilgrimage to Kasi. How he gave Ganga water to a thirsty donkey and considered his yatra to Rameshvar complete.
Moral of story 1:
God dwells in all beings big and small. So being kind to all living beings is also an offering of worship to the God.
Making a thirsty donkey happy instead of ignoring it and finishing his pilgrimage was Sant Eknath’s way of worshipping God. He recognized that God is present even in the donkey hence God would be pleased
Forms of worship-
1. Saying prayers
2. Feeding the pet
3. Cleaning the room
4. Good words shared to comfort or make people laugh.
Story 2: The story of the king and minister- where the minister always says, Everything is God’s wish everything happens for the best.

Please make sure to send in required supplies, a notebook and the prescribed books with your child every week. And do send in a healthy (nut-free) snack since most of us are hungry by the time we start our class ;)

Thanks and Regards,
Dhairyam Teachers.

p.s. pics will be sent separately in whatsapp, due to technical difficulties :D

Class on 2/21

Hari Om

Dear Parents,
As we all know, the BBNJ Bal Vihar family went to Akshardham Temple on 2/7/16. I am sure that all of you will agree that the temple is exceptionally built. Did the children see the Ram Mandir on one side of the main hall? The idols looked so life-like and grand! We are very thankful to co-coordinators both from our BBNJ family and from the Akshardham facility for the wonderful event planned.

There was no class on 2/14/16 since it was a long weekend.

The following is the update for the class that happened on 2/21/16. We started with the opening prayers. We had quite a few kids missing from class (due to illness, they updated me yesterday :)
Verses 20 - 23 were discussed in class. We understood the meaning of each verse and heard some related stories. The verse itself teaches us the quality in Hanuman Ji that we can and should be emulated and the story shows us how some people might be having said quality.

Verse 20: Meaning discussed in previous class.
Story: We heard the story of Dave who wanted to become a wrestler. Grand ma supported him. Even when everyone around him was discouraging him, he did not give up hope. And his grand mother supported him completely ( even after passing away ).
We discussed about the 3 types of people.
Type 1. They fear obstacles- do not start any work- keep imagining the obstacles that may or may not rise

Type 2. They start the work- the minute an obstacle arises they quit easily.

Type 3. They are Fearless like Hanuman Ji- even when they face obstacles they keep going, gain enthusiasm and courage to complete the task.

Hard Work and God's name will render all obstacles useless and grant us victory in whatever we do

We discussed some ideas of what the children thought to be a hard task and how they might approach it. i loved the answers the kids gave. This is such an intelligent bunch of kids!!!

Story 2: Man with a cart full of fruits. It gets stuck in mud. He was able to pull cart out by trying instead of blaming God and just sitting and crying. He was taught this by a little boy.

Moral : God helps those who help themselves.

Verse 21: Hanuman ji, the Sentinel

Meaning of verse 21: Hanuman Ji guards the door to Rama's palace, where none dare to enter (or go out) without his permission. He is not stopping bhaktas from entering. Rather, Hanuman Ji's devotion inspires other people to love Rama too  and come towards the Lord.

Verse 22: Hanuman Ji, the Protector
* We will enjoy happiness of every kind, when we seek refuge in Hanuman Ji.
* We should not complain about things going wrong in our lives, because God has a plan and eventually in God's plan everything works out for the best.

Meaning of verse 22: All those who seek refuge in Hanuman Ji, will enjoy happiness, Why should one be afraid of anything when Hanuman Ji is there to protect.
·         Think of Hanuman Ji- you get courage and power.
·         Surrender to Him- Gain good qualities and enjoy happiness.
·         Hanuman Ji will take us to Rama, which is the ultimate goal.
Story to emphasize the moral- We listened to the story of Saint Malidasa ( the little cow-grazer boy). When your heart is pure and you have immense faith, you can see God

Verse 23: Hanuman Ji, the Powerful
Hanuman Ji's roar causes good people to tremble in ecstasy and the bad people to tremble in fear!

Meaning of verse 23: Only Hanuman Ji is capable of controlling His power. All the 3 worlds tremble when Hanuman Ji roars.
Hanuman Ji's power is so great that no one can control it except Himself. When His mighty roar is heard, all 3 worlds tremble in fear. His power and strength knows no limits. Chanting the name of Hanuman Ji transfers the same power and courage to His devotees. After Hanuman Ji burned Lanka, the rakshasas, even on  hearing the word monkey got frightened.

At the end of the class I gave children a number and told them that it is the number for God. They have to look up what that number spells on the phone keypad. Please help them with this.

Class on 1/31/16

Hari OM
Dear Parents and Children,
We had an expedited assembly today due to our snow day off on 1/24. The performances by the Tamil class and sixth graders was inspiring.
In class we started with our usual routine of the Om chanting and Sahana Vavatu (our opening prayers). We then  chanted the Chalisa till verse number 17. Today we learnt the meanings of verses 17 through 20.

Verse 17: Hanuman, the Adviser
1. Hanuman Ji was the best adviser. He advised Vibhishana to surrender to Rama.
2. Understand the Glory and power of Rama.

Chanting the Rama Nama can help us to accomplish even the most difficult of tasks with ease.

Meaning of verse 17: Hanuman Ji advised Vibhishana to surrender to Rama, which Vibhishana accepted. When Ravana banishes him from Lanka,  he happily goes and surrenders himself at Rama's feet. After the war, Rama made Vibhishana, the king of Lanka.
We heard how Hanuman Ji met Vibhishana (story) - Vibhishana was a soft tongue among the sharp teeth (Rakshas). He was able  to meet Hanuman Ji because of his faith in Rama  which he kept  even through difficult times. This teaches us to keep chanting Rama nama even in the most troubled times, it will lead us to Hanuman Ji and better times!!

Story- Narada Vs Hanuman Veena playing. (Narada's pride was removed)
Conclusion- Surrender at the Lord's feet.

Verse 18: Hanuman Ji, the Fearless.
1. Hanuman Ji teaches us to let our imaginations and aims run as high as the sun and try to achieve things fearlessly.
Meaning of verse 18- Hanuman Ji leaped quite easily at the Sun 1000 miles away, mistaking it to be a sweet fruit. He let His imagination run high thinking the Sun was a fruit  :) He was then fearless enough to jump and try to reach the "fruit".
We discussed about Good Fearless and Bad Fearless traits. For eg. when faced by a hungry tiger we will be fearless of what anybody would say and run away from there. But when facing a dreaded exam we will be fearless and do our best!
Story- Birbal (Mahesh Das) Fearless answer given by a boy to the mighty King Akbar. Which road leads to Agra?
Edmund Hillary- He was able to conquer the Everest only in the second time. After losing in the first attempt he did not give up. He was fearless enough to make a second attempt.

Activity- Asking children to write down/or say- what they want to achieve and accomplish? (I got some cool answers for this :) )

Verse 19: Hanuman Ji, the Missionary
1. Hanuman Ji succeeded in His mission by chanting Rama Nama
2. Placing complete faith in Rama, Hanuman Ji was able to cross the mighty ocean.

Meaning of verse 19: Holding the Lords' ring in His mouth he flew across the ocean, which is no wonder for Him ( since Hanuman Ji capable of any achievement)
*Crossing the Ocean by chanting Rama Nama
* Building stone bridge by chanting Rama nama.
Story- Tale of the monkey group who went south wards to find Sita mata.
Sampati telling how Ravana took a woman to a far far away land and  how he saw Sita Mata crying there in Lanka.  Jambavan identified Hanuman Ji's strength and power.
Story of the Cowdung fuel maker chanting Rama nama was heard.

Verse 20: Hanuman ji, the Victorious.
1. God's grace and Hard work are the 2 things we need to be victorious.
2. God Helps those who helps themselves.

Meaning of verse 20: Even the most difficult tasks in the world are rendered easy by Hanuman Ji's grace.
All obstacles we face in life can be overcome by the grace of Hanuman Ji.
We have to discuss the  stories for the last verse in next class

Homework for next week- Please practice verses 1-20 in Chalisa and  in Guru stotram.
Coloring- Verses 17, 18,  19 and 20.
Also, I asked the children to "Call God" every night before  they sleep - I  just want  then to try this so as  to build a sort of one on one relationship with Him.

There is a prayer log in the Assembly handout (page 40) you may please initial and write in the date when the child does the homework and or chants the verses.

Please send in a notebook and other supplies every session along with the prescribed books and Guru stotram (my prayers book)
Kindly send in a nut free healthy snack. Thanks.
Please remember that next week there is no class at the Bridgewater High School, instead we have a mandatory field trip to Akshardham temple (Attendance will be taken). Please don't miss the opportunity to see the temple, it has exceptional sculptures!! It will be an eye opener for our kids to see the wonders created by Indian  sculptors. Hope to see you there

Thanks. Take care.

p.s. No pics this week since we wanted to cover the missed class of  24th too and time  was of the essence.

Class on 1/10/2016

Hari OM Happy New Years! Dear Parents and Kids,
Our first class in 2016 and we are so blessed to have a unique and a beautiful event with Swami Ji- The Bhiksha Vandanam. The event went so well and all of us are very, very happy! Thanks to every parent and child of Dhairyam family for joining us and made this event a big success. We all Thank Vikram's family for hosting this beautiful event at their home :)

Today we assembled at our classrooms at 9.30, since there was no cafeteria available. We did the regular prayers and then moved on to our lessons. We started off with chanting Hanuman Chalisa.

Hanuman Ji the glorious.
  • By working hard and using whatever gifts given by God- one become glorious.
  • Hanuman JI performed superhuman deeds and expected no rewards from Rama. This made the Lord always indebted to Hanuman JI.

We saw verse 13,14,15 and 16 today.
The meanings of these verses are-
13. Even the Seshanaaga, the 1000 headed serpent sings Hanuman Ji's glories in all His 1000 mouths. These are not enough to sing hanuman Ji's glories. There is no end to sing Hanuman Ji's praises.

Story- We understood the concept of finding fault is more easier than appraising anyone through a story of a painting exhibition.

Activity1- We wrote down what are the nice things we have done and to whom in our notebook.
Activity2- Say/Praise something nice about another kid in the class.

14 and 15- The Great sages like Sanaka and others, Brahma Ji, Seshanaaga, Naaradha and Goddess Saradha, Yama, Kubera, 8 guardians of the directions, Poets and scholars have not been able to praise Hanuman JI adequately.

Story enforcing using God given rewards to Humans- Parts of the body and utilize them with all hardwork to gain fame and popularity and get a glorified spot in the world.

Hanuman The wise Minister.
16. Hanuman JI helped Sugrivain regaining Lost Kingdom, by making him meet Lord Rama.
  • Hanuman Ji wisely advised Sugriva to find more details about Rama just by meeting Him.
  • Sugriva hid in Risyamuka mountain after his kingdom of Kishkintha was taken by his brother Vali.

Story- Good company fetches good things always. Story of 2 parrots- one in a tribal group who catch humans and eat them. Another parrot with Sages who always tries to protect anyone lost in the woods with food and shelter. The parrot in the good company is very friendlier and nice to all, but the parrot in the tribal group was always in a fighting mode.
Always try to be in the company of good people to get good thoughts and to do good deeds.

We practiced na Karmana, Vedic aarthi chanting to welcome Swami JI before the Bhiksha and also practiced chanting Guru Stotram.

Kindly send in all class requirements- Notebook, prescribed Text books, (Superman Hanuman and Hanuman Chalisa coloring book, and My prayers)
Kindly send in pencils, erasers and color pencils/markers- all in a nice backpack or Balavihar bag.

Snacks- We have a snack program, kindly pack a healthy and a nut free snack along with the children. Water bottle (labelled)

Next class on 1/17 at Chinmaya Vrindavan Ashram, Cranbury- we have a celebration- chinmaya mahotsav. We would like to see all children from our Dhairyam to be there with their families.
Kindly register for talent shows- we have awesome talents in our class.

On 1/24, we have regular classes at our Bridgewater Raritan High school.
Stay warm. Take care.

Thank you. Regards
Dhairyam Teachers.
